When a product has no cost per item, Shopify treats that cost as $0.00 and reports the whole sale as profit. It does not warn you. This app reads your catalogue and your orders, finds every variant with no cost recorded, works out how much of your recent revenue has no cost behind it, and ranks the gaps by how much revenue each one has already distorted. Paid plans let you fix the costs from that list and keep the numbers honest afterwards.
Because a single number would be a guess. The top of the range assumes every missing cost is zero, which is what your Shopify reports already assume. The bottom assumes those products cost their full sale price. Your real margin is somewhere between, and the width of the gap is exactly the cost data you are missing. Fill the costs in and it narrows to one figure.
Every margin uses the cost that applied at the time of the sale. A cost you enter today is never applied backwards to an earlier sale.
Those variants have a cost, and it is exactly zero. The app does not count them as missing, because a recorded value is yours. But Shopify’s bulk editor saves 0.00 when a cost is cleared, and a recorded zero flows into your profit reports exactly as a blank does. If any of them are not genuinely free to you, they need a real cost.
Shopify lets apps read the last 60 days of orders without extra approval. Two ways past that: on any plan, upload your own “Profit margin by order” export from Shopify (Analytics, then Reports) and the app uses Shopify’s own record of what each item cost when it sold, across your whole history. On the Pro plan, the app also reads your full order history directly, in the background, once Shopify has granted that access.
It reads products, variants, cost per item, and order line totals. It never reads customer names, emails, addresses or phone numbers, and never asks to. It holds one write permission, Edit inventory, used for exactly one field: cost per item, and only when you type a cost and click save, or when a paid feature you switched on writes a cost you have already seen. It never changes prices, products, inventory levels or orders. The full detail is in the privacy policy.
Shopify writes that screen, not the app, and it describes what each permission could reach, grouped its way. Line by line, what the app actually reads:
If an order sold a product that has since been deleted, or a custom line item that was typed straight into the order, Shopify books that sale at $0.00 cost, exactly as it does a blank cost. So the app counts it in “sales with no cost” and tells you how much came from such items, because your profit report is inflated by that amount either way. There is no product to put a cost on, so the app cannot fix it from the ranked list; the honest thing is to tell you it exists.
The same way Shopify’s own reports do. A refund is a sales reversal: the refunded amount comes off that line, and a fully refunded line drops out of the figures, so a returned item never shows as revenue with no cost behind it. A cancelled order stays counted until it is refunded, because Shopify counts it too. Refunds made after the sale are picked up by the nightly sync, which re-reads any order edited since the last one.
The free plan is the trial. There is no time-limited trial to forget to cancel.
Billing runs through Shopify. To stop paying but keep the free audit, open the app, click Manage plan at the bottom of the page, and choose Free; Shopify ends the charge. To remove the app entirely, uninstall it from Settings, then Apps and sales channels, in your Shopify admin. Uninstalling deletes your data from the app 48 hours later, as the privacy policy describes. Your costs stay in Shopify — they were always written to Shopify’s own cost per item field, not kept somewhere private.
The audit is a snapshot of your store at the moment it was read. Refresh reads it again. If a cost was added, cleared or edited in between, by you, a staff member, a bulk edit or another app, the figures move to match. The “things changed since you last looked” list at the top names each change.
